Volunteer Opportunity For A Tech Savvy Person

4/28/2021

Picture
Are you a lover of hiking and the A.T. who is also a technology geek? We have a volunteer opportunity for you.

Back in 2011, the Museum received funding from the Quimby Family Foundation to set up the site http://www.athikerpictures.org/ It is a searchable database of all the thru-hiker photos taken at ATC headquarters at Harpers Ferry, WV. The database has not been updated with new hiker photos since 2008.

We would like to update the database with photos since 2008. The site was written using a program called Ruby on Rails. We would also like to upgrade the site to the current version of RoR.
Does this sound like a project you would be interested in tackling? If so, contact us at [email protected]

By the way, we have a complete archive of hiker photos available to search and view on a computer at the A.T. Museum.

Volunteer Spotlight - Becky

4/21/2021

PictureBecky on a paddlewheel cruise on the Mississippi River in Lacrosse, WI
Name: Becky

How long you've been volunteering for the museum and in what capacity: I started volunteering as a museum docent in 2019. I spent the pandemic summer of 2020 volunteering in the museum library doing an inventory of the latest library donations and of the "Book Sale" books.  Then I spent the winter of 2020/21 assisting Sam and two other volunteers inventorying the museum archives, including more than 1000 Shelter Registers that have been donated to the museum over the years.

Favorite place to hike in PA: Other than following the AT through Pennsylvania during my 1992 AT Thru-Hike, I've not yet explored too much of PA. My wife and I bicycled the Pine Creek Trail that runs through the Grand Canyon of PA. While we were bicycling it last fall, I learned of the West Rim Trail of the Canyon, so now I want to go back someday to backpack it; perhaps, when the autumn leaves are at their peak.

Favorite place to hike outside of PA: Oh so many places come to mind, but if I must choose just one, I'll go with Grayson Highlands, VA.   Though the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu ranks high as well.

Other hobbies (besides hiking): Bicycle Touring (mostly on rails-to-trail), Canoeing, Reading/Writing, and Genealogy.

A fun fact or other information that you're interested in sharing with the group: Being a genealogist, I've traced my family's ancestry back to the arrival of the Mayflower, specifically to John and Priscilla Alden, Richard Warren, and several others.  There was to be a 400th celebration of the Mayflower's arrival in 1620 last year (2020) in Plymouth, MA, but as so many other things were, it was cancelled due to the pandemic.  I had planned a walking/bicycling/canoeing journey retracing the path of 12 generations of my ancestors from Plymouth, MA to central, Ohio where I grew up.  My route (in reverse of what they did, starting in Ohio and ending in MA) would have followed back roads, rivers, rail trails, and footpaths like the Tuscarora and Appalachian Trails. The plan was to visit historical societies and sites along the way and join a few family and pioneer reunions that I had learned of in several states along my route. I wanted to camp and walk on the lands where my ancestors had homesteaded.  I would have arrived in Plymouth just in time for the planned 4-day, 400th Anniversary Event.  Alas, all that planning, both my own and that of the event organizers, was for naught due to the coronavirus pandemic.

On May 7, Support The Museum At Give Local York. DO IT FOR EARL!!

4/15/2021

Picture
For 24 hours on May 7, 2021, the Appalachian Trail Museum is honoring Earl Shaffer, a York, Pennsylvania, hometown boy who, after serving 4 ½ years in the US Army during World War II, made Trail history by becoming the first person to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail.

York was always home to Earl, from youthful wanderings through woods to his spartan living as an adult. His history-making thru-hike in 1948 from Georgia to Maine was followed in 1965 with another thru-hike from Maine to Georgia and then again in 1998 at age 79 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of his initial trek.

Earl’s history-making adventures always brought him back to York. Your Give Local York online donation to the museum on May 7 celebrates Earl’s story and supports the work of the museum to tell the stories of hikers who have followed in his footsteps.  Please give to Give Local York by following THIS LINK. Do it for Earl!

From new Museum manager Julie Queen:
Opening weekend was a success! We had a little over 50 visitors on Saturday and 29 on Sunday and beautiful weather both days. Thank you to EVERYONE who made the weekend a success! I have attached a few photos from Saturday and Sunday. In one photo you'll see myself, Becky Foreman, and Red Wolf (visiting all the way from Savannah, GA!) and in the second you'll see Red Wolf, museum treasurer Jay Sexton, and his daughter.
