Challenges and Rewards of the A.T. in Vermont & New Hampshire

Welcome to the North Woods - Challenges and Rewards of the A.T. in Vermont & New Hampshire,  Sunday, June 10 at 2 PM - 3:30 PM

Presented by AT Museum Docent and hiker Lorrie Preston

The pulse quickens when you hit the trail in the North Woods. The fragrance of conifers, muddy bogs, mossy glades, signs of moose, remote wilderness, rocks that require climbing more than hiking, and breathtaking views of spectacular mountains and valleys for as far as the eye can see, all create a special magic on the trail. The Green and White Mountains, the Presidentials, the AMC huts, confronting Mt. Washington - known for some of the worst weather on Earth - all combine to create what feels like the biggest adventure yet along the trail. In this 7th in a series showcasing the A.T. through the 14 states, we'll enjoy the beauty of alpine meadows, rugged mountains, and everything in between.

Thursday, May 31 at 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM

While Benton MacKaye and Myron Avery are widely recognized as the “founding fathers” of the Appalachain Trail, the women who contributed to the Trail project are mostly unknown – until now. Three women – Jean Stephenson, Ruth Blackburn and Margaret Drummond – will join the ranks of MacKaye and Avery as A.T. “giants” who carried their vision and work forward to preserve the trail we all know and love today. Presentation by Gwen Loose, Vice-President of the Appalachian Trail Museum.

A record crowd of 109 honored the 2018 Appalachian Trail Hall of Fame inductees and other honorees at the 8th Annual A.T. Hall of Fame Banquet.  The Banquet returned to the newly renovated Allenberry Resort in Boiling Springs, Pennsylvania on May 4, 2018.  Attendance at the 2018 Banquet topped the previous records set in 2011 and 2016.
The 2018 Hall of Fame class is Bill Kemsley, founder of Backpacker Magazine; the late Elizabeth Levers, known as the "Mother of the A.T." in New York State; the late George Masa, a legendary photographer and trail builder in the Smokies; and Bob Peoples, a hostel operator and founder of the Hard Core trail crew.  Ms. Levers was represented by Ron Rosen of the NY-NJ Trail Conference.  Mr. Masa was represented by Libby Kephart Hargrave, great granddaughter of Horace Kephart, Masa’s closest friend and 2016 Hall of Fame inductee.
In addition to the Hall of Fame class, Museum President Larry Luxenberg honored Bob Proudman, a key leader on the Trail since 1965.  Karen Lutz, Banquet MC, honored Dale Saunders, a/k/a "Grey Beard", who became the oldest A.T. thru-hiker last year at age 82.  Ms. Lutz, scheduled to retire this year as Director of Appalachian Trail Conservancy's Mid-Atlantic Region Office, was honored with a custom carved hiking stick.

Ron Tipton, former Executive Director & CEO of ATC, received a lifetime membership award from the Appalachian Long Distance Hikers Association.  Ron is a founding member of ALDHA.  Music during the reception was provided by the Buc Hill Aces.

Each Hall of Fame honoree, plus Ms. Lutz, received a hiking stick custom carved by John “Bodacious” Beaudet.  On Saturday, May 5, the Museum held its annual Hall of Fame Festival in Pine Grove Furnace State Park.

Our 8th Annual Hall of Fame Festival will be jam packed with entertainment. The Festival will be at the Museum on May 5.

The day starts at 10 am with a presentation by Ron Rosen on 2018 Hall of Fame inductee Elizabeth Levers.  At 11, we'll have a talk by Dale Sanders a/k/a Grey Beard, who in 2017 set a record for oldest person to thru-hike the A.T. in a year, at age 82.

After that you'll be hungry, so stay for a picnic lunch at noon, featuring music by the Buc Hill Aces.  At 1, Libby Kephart Hargrave will lead a panel discussing the life and achievements of A.T. pioneer and photographer George Masa, another 2018 Hall of Fame inductee.  Joining Libby will be Masa scholars Bill Hart and Janet McCue.

At 2 pm, the Buc Hill Aces will perform again.  Throughout the day, Linda Patton will lead tours of our research library project.  We'll also be showing our new Myron Avery canoe display on the third floor.

Come and make a day of it at the Museum on Saturday, May 5.  It's free!!
