The A.T. Museum held its first volunteer picnic of 2021 on June 21. Manager Julie Queen organized the event. About 20 volunteers attended. Andre Weltman of Friends of Pine Grove Furnace served as grillmaster. After the meal, Gwen Loose talked about future exhibits, including the interactive map. Andre mentioned the two programs on the Old Grist Mill, to be held June 24 & July 10. Jim Foster talked about the A.T. Vista hike on August 7 and the Hall of Fame Banquet on Nov. 20.

A.T. Vista Pine Grove Furnace & Museum Hike Sat., Aug 7, 2021, 8:30 am.

Meet at Furnace Stack Parking Lot, Pine Grove Furnace State Park, Gardners, PA

6 miles, moderate terrain

Leader: Museum Volunteer Jim Foster

This is one on a series of hikes along the entire Appalachian Trail to celebrate the 2021 virtual A.T. Vista. For more information on A.T. Vista, go to the website www.atvista.org From the Furnace Stack Parking Lot, we’ll hike northbound on the A.T. out of the Park climbing South Mountain until the junction with the Pole Steeple Trail. We’ll follow Pole Steeple back down to the Park, then follow a dirt road along beautiful Laurel Lake back to the Furnace Stack lot. Following the hike, there will be an optional guided tour of the Appalachian Trail Museum, also within the Park.

Registrations are available through the meetup.com group Day Hikers of Central PA. Participants MUST be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. A limited number of spaces are available for those who are not members of Day Hikers by using the A.T. Museum email address atmbanquet@gmail.com

Laurie Potteiger Is Leaving ATC, But Not The Trail

6/6/2021

Our great friend Laurie Potteiger is retiring after 33 years at Appalachian Trail Conservancy. HERE is a link to her final post on ATC's website. For that time, Laurie has literally been the face of the A.T., greeting hikers as they came in to the ATC Visitors Center to get their traditional photos. Laurie has also been a fixture at many A.T. events, like Trail Days, the ALDHA Gatherings and the A.T. Biennials. Many of us were first inspired to take the plunge and attempt a thru-hike after talking to Laurie at one of these events.

Because of her typical modesty, Laurie said nothing in her farewell post about her involvement with the A.T. Museum. When our founder and President, Larry Luxenberg, first proposed a Museum to honor and showcase America's most popular and heavily used long distance hiking trail, Laurie was among the first to sign on and agree to help. She has represented ATC on our Board since the early days.

Although Laurie is leaving her job at the ATC, she is certainly not leaving the trail. She and her husband Dick will be hiking the trail. They'll also continue to maintain their Trail section for the Potomac A.T. Club. She's also promised to remain active with the Museum as well. Frankly, we weren't about to let her go.

On behalf of everyone involved with the Museum project, we wish Laurie and Dick the very best on  her retirement. We are sure we will see them on the Trail and at the Museum soon.
