Our Amazing Gardens!!

Now that the pandemic is easing, it's a good time to visit the Museum. Of course, we recommend strongly that you get fully vaccinated first. We do have some new exhibits and a new entrance on the second floor via our ADA accessible ramp. But another reason to come is to see our amazing gardens.

Lorrie Preston is our Naturalist and Wildlife Gardener. With help from her husband Bob and several other volunteers, she has done an amazing job in our gardens. Take a look at this slideshow to get an idea of what they've done. You can also read Lorrie's regular columns on the Gardens, "The Latest Buzz" HERE on our website.

But, to get a full appreciation of our pollinator friendly and certified wildlife habitat gardens, you must come and see them. Hope to see you soon!!

Volunteer Spotlight - Nan

5/12/2021

Picture
Name: Nan aka Drag’n fly

Location: I grew up in Marietta, PA and have spent most of my life in central east PA, very close to the AT and have always been interested in the idea of a long trail. I retired in 2003 from the Pfaltzgraff Co., York, PA, where I was the manager of the accounting dept., have four children, 2 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.

How long you've been volunteering for the museum and in what capacity: I have been volunteering at the museum as a docent for several years and really love talking to the hikers and visitors about the trail. Really I love the trail. When I am at the museum I get the itch to be out on the trail. I like to keep the backpack ready and in the foyer. Will I ever do another thru hike? Hmmm!!!!!

Other hobbies (besides hiking): Along with hiking I do a lot of canoeing and kayaking. Two years ago I was introduced to kayak sailing and that has really been a lot of fun. Cross country skiing in the winter keeps me busy. This winter was great with all the snow in PA, since traveling out of state was not an option because of the covid. Generally I am traveling to CA, (that’s Canada) NH, VT, NY, etc to get snow for skiing.

When not traveling around in my VW camper van, with boots, bikes, and canoes/kayak, I like to work in my garden. I live in Camp Hill along the Conodoguinet Creek.

A fun fact or other information that you're interested in sharing with the group: I am a 2014 AT thru hiker, who loves the AT. In 2010 I finished a section hike, which took me 6 years, but that just did not satisfy me. I still had the urge to do a thru hike. While visiting the AT Conf Headquarters in Harpers Ferry in 2013, I learned that the oldest female to hike the entire AT, in one year, was 71 and I was coming up on 74, so I decided to go for the glory. HA! HA! So on March 30, 2014 I started the trek in GA and finished in ME on Oct 4.

Since I finished my AT hike I have done some other long hikes: 2 sections on the PCT, a large part of the AZT, and at least 50 miles on all, but one of the other 11 NSTs (National Scenic Trails).
I have made a lot of good friends while hiking on the AT and at the museum. It is a bright spot in my life. I love the AT.

Volunteer Spotlight - Ed

5/2/2021

PictureEd near Katahdin in Maine
Name: My name is Ed. I grew up outside of Philadelphia and graduated from Gettysburg College in 1977. Obviously, I have found it very difficult to leave the area!

Location: I have lived in Gettysburg, PA since 1981.

How long you've been volunteering for the museum and in what capacity: I have been volunteering at the AT Museum since 2014, the year I finished the trail. I have been active as a docent, have done a lot of painting, and have worked many hours on the ramp to the second floor.

Favorite place to hike in PA: My favorite place to hike in Pennsylvania is anywhere from Caledonia to Duncannon.

Favorite place to hike outside of PA: My favorite place to hike outside of the state is, so far, in the High Sierras. The John Muir Trail is hard to beat! But Maine was pretty awesome too. And southern Virginia. And the Colorado Rockies. And the Cascades.

Other hobbies (besides hiking): Besides hiking, I also am very involved with singing and acting. I have been active with three different choirs over the years, have performed with singing groups overseas, and have been a big part of Gettysburg Community Theatre. I have also been in plays at the Totem Pole Playhouse and Chambersburg Theater.

A fun fact or other information that you're interested in sharing with the group: I spent my career teaching health and physical education and coaching track and field (hence the trail name 'Phys Ed'), and I have been a part time sports writer for the Gettysburg Times since 1993, covering mostly high school sports. I am married to my college sweetheart (43 years), who just retired as President of Gettysburg College. We have three grown children, and one particularly awesome granddaughter.
