Below are links to images of each page of the 1985 Pierce
Pond Register obtained from that shelter just south
of the Kennebec River in Maine. The log begins with
an entry on May 14, 85 and ends on Aug 31, 85. This
register contains the last entry made by Alice and George
Ference before the tragic death of Alice while crossing
the Kennebec. The implementation of a ferry to make
the crossing was set up due to this unfortunate event.
Although we do not have the actual register entry from
Jerome Brook LT just one shelter before Pierce Pond,
the Ference's entry was recorded by another hiker in
1985. It read: 8-25-85 Early Morning.
Rain during night but has slowed up. On to the Kennebec
and an early morning swim tomorrow. George & Alice
Ference Brunswick, Ga S-K 9 yrs This
entry apparently was made by George since his name appears
first. The entry from Pierce Pond; however, was signed
with Alice's name first, indicating she was the one
who made the entry.
To be legible,
some of the images are large in terms of internet usage,
and may be a problem for those using dialup connections.
For others with faster connections, there will probably
be no problem. The names listed below are spelled as
correctly as could be decifered. If you find an error,
please let us know. If you have a log book that you
would like to donate to the A.T. Museum, please contact
us as well. If you have a log book but would rather
keep it yourself, contact us for directions on how to
scan the images yourself and send us a copy so all can
enjoy. Thank You.
